About El Cerro
El Cerro, the Hill of the Cross, Colina de la Cruz, is the steep hillside rising east of the Malecón to the cross-topped Mirador La Cruz del Cerro: cobblestone streets, Cuauhtémoc at the lower edge with the funicular base station, Matamoros as the central spine, Ecuador, Corona, Aldama and the straight climb of Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez, with pedestrian andadores behind Matamoros where upper Abasolo is limited to feet, bikes and donkeys. Gringo Gulch with its riverfront colonial villas, Casa Kimberly and Hacienda San Ángel meets it at the Río Cuale edge. Downhill in ten minutes are the Malecón, Playa Olas Altas, Galería Row, the Parroquia de Guadalupe and the Mercado Municipal; Los Muertos in twelve.
Traditional vernacular houses with bougainvillea balconies and murals mixed with boutique condo infill and a few restored villas; long-time Mexican families, Old Vallarta expat buyers, artists and café owners, and rental investors. Puesta del Sol on Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez is the gated enclave with 24-hour security; Vista Cuale on Cuauhtémoc, twenty-two units with a rooftop pool, is the pre-construction; Alcatraz on Ecuador is pitched to rental investors; historic houses on Matamoros and Corona come up as fixer-uppers and view homes.
Practical points. The climb is the limiting factor, five hundred metres up from the Malecón on foot or five minutes by taxi; some lanes are stairs, so check access for luggage, groceries and mobility. Parking is scarce to nonexistent on the older streets. Bar noise from Olas Altas reaches the lower blocks. Hillside drainage and retaining walls need a rainy-season look, and foreigners hold through a fideicomiso.
