Careyes, Costa Careyes, is not a town but a private compound on the Costalegre founded in 1968 by the Italian banker Gianfranco Brignone: a master-planned resort of 35,000 acres with nine residential sub-communities, castles and casitas on the cliffs, nine miles of untouched beach inside the reserve and a cable car at Constelaciones, three or more hours south of Vallarta on Highway 200, with Cuixmala next door and the Four Seasons Tamarindo and Xala further along. Buyers are collectors, privacy seekers and the very high end; there is no full-service hospital on the Costalegre, the highway is two lanes with rockslides from June to October, and the compound's own rules and dues govern everything, so read them before a deposit.
