About Costa Alegre
Costalegre in the MLS is the Jalisco coast south of Cabo Corrientes to the Colima border, a hundred and fifty kilometres of mostly empty shoreline held by a handful of large landowners and ejidos, the opposite of the bay's density. It is not on the Bay of Banderas at all. Barra de Navidad at the far southern end is the most developed town, with the Isla Navidad resort and its two-hundred-slip marina across the lagoon and San Patricio-Melaque next door. Punta Pérula is the swimming end of the eight-kilometre white beach of Bahía de Chamela, a flat village walkable in fifteen minutes. Careyes is not a town but a private compound founded in 1968, thirty-five thousand acres and nine residential enclaves, with Cuixmala, El Tamarindo and the Xala and Chablé projects as its neighbours. The MLS also files Playa Careyeros here by name, though that beach is in Nayarit next to Punta de Mita.
Buyers here are people who want the wild coast and can live with distance: no hospital in the whole strip, serious cases go to Manzanillo, forty-five minutes to an hour and a half, or back to Vallarta, three to four hours.
Practical points. Barra de Navidad is about two hundred and thirty kilometres and four hours from Vallarta's airport but forty-five minutes from Manzanillo's; the private Costalegre airstrip at Chalacatepec opened in 2024 for private aircraft only. Highway 200 is the single paved road, two lanes, with mountain switchbacks north of El Tuito; do not drive it at night. A vehicle is essential everywhere except the centres of Barra and Pérula. Cell signal drops in the coves. Ejido and communal land are the norm outside the master plans: the notary's title search decides whether a lot is purchasable before anything else.
