About San Sebastián del Oeste

San Sebastián del Oeste, San Sebastián, El Real to the tour operators, is the silver-mining Real founded in 1605 at about 1,480 metres in the Sierra Madre, a Pueblo Mágico of some 630 people in the town and 5,000 in the municipality, sixty-four kilometres and an hour and a half from the Vallarta airport on the winding road 544: the Plaza de Armas and the Baroque church of San Sebastián, Calle Allende at the west entry, the El Calabozo museum, Hacienda Jalisco's agave museum behind the airstrip, La Quinta's organic coffee hacienda, the restored haciendas La Galera and San José, the ruin of La Máquina, and the La Bufa mirador with its chapel above the town. La Estancia de Landeros is the small pueblo fifteen minutes down the road toward Vallarta.

There are no condos, no gated subdivisions and no pre-construction: the inventory is in-town view lots in Cuauhtémoc, a few hundred metres from the plaza with developer financing, colonial casonas to restore, restored haciendas, mountain parcels with streams, the 622-hectare Potrero de Mulas, and a couple of large houses on road 544 such as La Ermita. Buyers are retirement, second-home, hacienda-restoration and ranch expats after cool nights all year and Pueblo Mágico streets at sub-coastal prices. San Sebastián lies outside the fifty-kilometre coastal restricted zone, so foreigners take title directly in their own name with no bank trust. There is no hospital, only the Centro de Salud, and the nearest full care is Vallarta; the postal code splits three ways, so match the deed's location to the parcel; and the mountain road is slow in the June-to-October rains.
